LOST in youth care
Against a backdrop of a dysfunctional youth care system and the violation of children's human right to be heard in Dutch youth care, the short ethnographic documentary LOST in youth care
explores different perspectives on how ‘the best interests of the child’ is put into practice. The film attempts to render the invisible visible and juxtaposes the recollections of 17-year-old
Jayden, views of youth protectors, and the contemporary experiences of 14-year-old Ayşe and her family, to create a multilayered understanding of how voices are hindered. It sheds light on the
invisibility of young people in Dutch youth care, despite good intentions, as well as the visible and invisible disavowal that allows voices to go unheard, generating trauma, fear and anger.
